What is if2 -?

IF2, also known as initiation factor 2, is a protein involved in the initiation of translation in prokaryotes. It is responsible for bringing the initiator tRNA to the ribosome and also plays a role in the dissociation of the initiation complex. In bacteria, there are two isoforms of IF2: IF2α and IF2β. They are encoded by separate genes and have different roles in translation initiation. IF2 has been studied extensively in various bacterial species and its structure and function are well understood. It is an important target for antibiotics that inhibit bacterial protein synthesis.
